Scaffolding

I found this scaffolding at one of the buildings in Singapore and was attracted by the strong lines and pattern of the setting. I pre-visualized the effect that I could achieve once the light background is treated with my favorite colour derivation technique. One of my photography students volunteered to climb up the scaffolding to complete my perceived image of a man at work. The added bias relief treatment obviously boosted the visual impact of the image. This slide won the H. Morrison Medal of the 1984 Northern Counties International Salon, UK. It was an honour for me to be invited as a judge of the same salon in 1996.

Bathing Time

I returned to Parang Tritis, Central Java, Indonesia in 1985. At the same beach where I captured “After The Catch”, I found this new image of a villager at work. I utilized the curve of the sand beach and the rim light in the water area to form the basic elements of the image. The decisive moment of the water splashing onto the cow further enhanced the visual impact. This image won a Bronze Medal at the 32nd CPA International Salon, Hong Kong, held in 1991.

After The Catch

The lighting was low but the light touched the villagers and the sand dune. This was my first impression of Parang Tritis, Central Java in 1980. The villagers were on the way home after their catch at the nearby seaside . The villagers are shy people always trying to avoid the camera. With my 250mm lens, I captured this image which I felt reflected the calm and cool ambience of the place. This slide won a medal of the Iris Aartrijke International Salon, Belgium, held in 1988.
