Light & Shadow – 1959-1968: First Light

Lip Seng’s initial brush with photography during his schooldays inspired him to embark on a more serious approach to his craft. During these years, he mastered and experimented with the basics of composition and lighting. At the same time, he perfected his techniques with darkroom-print enlargement and processing. It was during this era that he was conferred the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) (of the United Kingdom).

Two of the twelve excellent black-and-white prints from that ARPS panel, as well as some of his early work with colour transparencies, are showcased in this section. Four of Lip Seng’s early work with colour transparencies were acquired by the National Museum of Singapore in 2008 as part of their National Collection.
