While touring the Saragan, East Java in 1985, I came across this villager busy with her laundry work. I decided to use a slower shutter speed (1/30 sec.) to capture the decisive moment and at the same time, to convey a sense of movement. The lighting condition also further enhanced the visual impact of this image. This is the Gold Medal Award winner of the Birkenhead International Salon, UK, held in 1989.
One of the awards that this image obtained was the PSA Gold Medal for the Best Photo Travel Slide of the Gold Coast International Salon, USA in 1992. This is a very simple picture but with strong lines, pattern, gorgeous colours and good composition. For travel pictures, one of the important factors is to depict the place in its natural states.
My first impression of Indonesia on my first visit there in 1980 was a very refreshing one. This image was captured at a village near Mount Bromo. The early morning atmosphere was very strong. The lighting for the whole setting was just right.
This is a kind of picture that could be either classified as photo-journalism or as a photo-travel picture. The natural state of the place is well depicted in the image despite the picture being very monochromatic in nature. This image has won a number of Gold Medals of which one was a PSA Gold Medal for the Best Slide of the Show at the 6th Omni Candid International Salon, Belgium in 1983.
