After The Catch

The lighting was low but the light touched the villagers and the sand dune. This was my first impression of Parang Tritis, Central Java in 1980. The villagers were on the way home after their catch at the nearby seaside . The villagers are shy people always trying to avoid the camera. With my 250mm lens, I captured this image which I felt reflected the calm and cool ambience of the place. This slide won a medal of the Iris Aartrijke International Salon, Belgium, held in 1988.

Final Rinse

One of my successful slides in the interenational salons is this colour-derivation work with blue diazochrome film. The original image was captured at the Potong Pasir area where the worker was rinsing rattan in a pond for use in making furniture.

I wish that I had Photoshop during then! For this case, I spent a lot of time in retouching and working in the darkroom in oder to achieve the visual impact of this image. This slide won the PSA Gold Medal for the Best Slide of the show at the 8th Torreon International Salon, Mexico, held in 1975.

Voices of Spring

This is another set-up image of a ballerina. I found the bamboo tree-framing around the Changi area in Singapore. I posed the ballerina against the blank sky as a back drop. The sky in the original image was then treated with the blue diazochrome film to creat the bias relief effect. This image was awarded the PSA Gold Medal for the Best Contemporary Slide of the 38th Magic Empire International Salon, USA, held in 1985.
