Rays of Dawn

Here’s an image taken a year ago from my trip to New South Wales, Australia last year. This sunrise scene was taken at Nobby’s Beach at Newcastle. I have fond memories of waking up really early (between 4-5am on most days) with my dad to catch early morning scenes such as this. The sacrifice in sleep was well worth the nice images I captured!

The Buoyant Fleet Of Portree

Cheerfully coloured boats greeted me at the bay at Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland during my visit. These boats were berthed in the harbour in the evening. What was interesting was the way the boats swayed sideways along with the gentle waves in oscillation, showing for a moment their broadsides, and a moment later, their portsides in different alignment relative to one another. The colours of the boats provided a good contrast to the otherwise drab and simple grey of the surrounding waters.

The Rainbow Over Oban

A trip up to McCaigs Tower in Oban, Scotland, (during my July trip) saw an unexpected find of a brilliant rainbow over the Oban Bay. As the rainbow changed in intensity with the ever-changing lighting, I kept snapping away and bracketing exposures in the hope of capturing the rainbow at the correct intensity and exposure.

The result you see here is a combination of exposure, as well as post-processing with CaptureONE SLR Rebel Edition and further gradient-masked level adjustment in Photoshop to bring out the dramatic and brilliant colours of the rainbow. I like the juxtaposition of the different land areas from near to far as well as the dark and forbiding-looking mountains in the distance. This gives a sense of depth and perspective to the overall composition of the shot.
