A Colourful Morning

A Colourful Morning
Back to the New Zealand images for a change… I caught the rainbow outside Alpine Cottage, our 5-star motel at Lake Tekapo, a couple of minutes after dad took his shots. The skies were brightening rapidly and we wished we could have gotten up even earlier. Nevertheless, the early morning outing was a fruitful one and we managed to return of a haul of good pictures 🙂

I am in a midst of a RAW workflow dilemma: while Adobe Lightroom offers more control with a slick, easy-to-use interface as well as a smoother workflow compared to the software supplied with my 40D (Canon Digital Photo Professional), I am somewhat drawn to the excellent colour rendition DPP generates. I prefer the tones and brighter colours that Canon DPP seem to be able to pull out readily compared to Lightroom. This is despite loading Lightroom with several calibration presets for the 40D which I have found on the web. So frustrated with Lightroom’s colour rendering that I have decided to reprocess several of the keepers from my NZ trip completely with Canon DPP. I hope to post up the results for a comparison soon… Meanwhile here’s the same shot as above, but processed with Lightroom for a comparison.

Overlooking A New Dawn

Overlooking A New Dawn
We tried our luck a second time at the Esplanade waterfront this morning after experiencing good lighting yesterday (despite the foreboding gloomy skies initially). This time round, we focused our efforts at the Merlion Park. A dramatic sunrise and beautiful skies awaited us when we arrived at the Merlion, which is shown here overlooking the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort construction site. I wonder whether if we will still be able to capture such a sunrise shot when the resort opens in 2009.

Good Morning, Singapore!

Good Morning, Singapore!
A break from the New Zealand pictures… It’s been a while since I set forth to the Esplanade waterfront for some pictures. A recent spate of good morning weather prompted my dad and I to try our luck again at capturing Singapore’s cityscape by the waterfront this morning. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t as promising as the previous few days’. Nevertheless, the sun made its appearance just at the right time, bathing the buildings and Esplanade Bridge in a warm, golden glow.

Update – With the Canon 40D, I had to abandon my favourite RAW processor that have served me since I started using the EOS 300D — Capture One. Yes, there is a new version of Capture One (version 4) that processes 40D files. However, I feel that development of the program have taken a turn for the worse. Just look at their support forums and you’ll get what I mean. While I love the workflow that Adobe Lightroom provides, I am somewhat disappointed by its rendering of colours for Canon RAW files (even with a lot of tweaking). The software Canon provides (Digital Photo Professional) does an excellent job in the colour department but its clunky interface does make RAW processing a real pain. The original file for this post was processed in Lightroom. I thought the above rendition by DPP looks better in the end.
