Fleeting moments frozen in time

The Runaway Shadow

Australia ranks as one of my top destinations for photography currently 🙂 I had the pleasure to visit the country twice (once in September, and again in Novemeber last year) and came home with lots nice pictures.

This is one particularly memorable one taken off Busselton Jetty, Western Australia. A little girl playing along the sunny coast cast a striking shadow on the pristine sands. I had the advantage of a high view point when capturing this shot. The tricky bit was the exposure. Due to the high contrast between the reflected light off the water and the girl, I had to underexpose the shot generally so as not to blow the highlights in the water. I am thankful for the RAW capabilities of my camera though: the details in the sand and in the girl were later restored with the help of post-processing of the RAW file coupled with levels adjustments in Photoshop.

In A World Of Their Own

I was looking through some old pictures that I took in the earlier part of the year and came across this photo that I took during a Hari Raya Haji prayer session held at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium in Singapore in February.

The Malay children are always interesting to watch during such prayer sessions — many entertain themselves while the adults are busy deep in prayer. Here are two of them seemingly in a world of their own while the rest of the adults are engrossed with prayer. Selective masking and processing has been performed in Photoshop to bring attention to the two children.

“Woo Hoo…”

Another take of the playful child performing his “stunts” at the Kota Tinggi waterfall in Malaysia. Taken from a slightly different angle, I like the way the steps form nice diagonal patterns across the frame. Of course, the dynamic action of the child frozen in a decisive moment is the main highlight of the shot!
